Rumors of Nick Saban’s Retirement Heat Up Ahead of Michigan
|The Alabama Crimson Tide may need a new head coach sooner rather than later.
Rumors concerning Nick Saban’s future continue to circulate as the College Football Playoff approaches. According to CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd, there is rising speculation that Saban may retire at the end of the season.
“Meanwhile, the Saban retirement buzz started bubbling up about a month ago,” Dodd wrote in a December 31, 2023 post titled “Why Alabama’s Nick Saban, Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh could both move on after this College Football Playoff.” “Will perhaps the greatest college football coach of all time consider retiring?” One agent told CBS Sports that during the previous 30 days, his phone started ringing with informed speculation that Saban’s career was coming to an end.
“In a way, that’s not surprising. As Saban, 72, ages and continues to stockpile titles, such talk has appeared from time to time. This could be more of the same… Alternatively, if Alabama wins it all again, eight national titles may be enough for the legend.”

To be clear, Saban has not officially stated that he is nearing retirement. During an appearance on Fox’s “Big Noon Kickoff” at the start of the season, Saban stated that he still enjoys coaching.
“When you don’t have the same amount of enjoyment and I think probably there’s always a time where it might be better if someone else did it,” Saban said in an interview with On3.com. “I’m not sure how you know exactly when that is. “I adore it.”
