Rookie Is Still In The Browns’ Practice Squad

Joe Flacco will remain on the practice squad, the Browns said on Tuesday, defying rumors that other clubs could try to sign the veteran from Cleveland.

Joe Flacco will continue to be a member of the Cleveland Browns practice squad before to their upcoming game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the team confirmed on Tuesday.

Although this is typical process in the NFL, some fans thought that this would make him available to be signed and picked up elsewhere, which caused a little of panic throughout the nation of Browns supporters.

Do not worry! Joe Flacco will be a Cleveland Brown next week and throughout the remainder of the season.

At the highest level, the practice squad rules are pretty straightforward:

Practice squad players can be placed on the gameday roster THREE times during the season
After those first three designations, they revert to the practice squad
Upon the fourth designation to the gameday roster, they must be signed to the 53-man roster
If they are not signed to the team’s 53-man roster after their fourth game, they will then go to the waiver wire and be available for any team to pick up
Teams are allowed to activate two practice squad players per week.

When quarterback PJ Walker was going through the same exercise earlier in the season, we encountered the same situation. He was added to the 53-man roster following his third game of the season, and he is currently a member of the active roster.

Cleveland is acting in this manner because they wish to avoid using a third roster space for a quarterback. The practice squad weeks for PJ Walker and Dominican Thompson-Robinson are at an end. Thus, Flacco should only be considered a member of the “practice squad” by title for the next two weeks.

There were some “wow, he still has it” moments in Flacco’s Cleveland debut, and he can lead this team to the postseason. He had a good day, going 23-for-44 for 254 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in the Browns’ 36-19 loss to the Rams, but for one decision.

It’s still unclear how Dorian Thompson-Robinson will fare physically, so Flacco should continue to start at quarterback, at least initially.
