Revealed: Tottenham announces Birmingham City man replacement

Tottenham Hotspur has officially confirmed significant changes to its coaching staff for the 2024/25 Premier League season.

Spurs have added fresh talent to their backroom crew as they prepare for life under Ange Postecoglou, following Chris Davies’ move to League One club Birmingham City.

Spurs’ Coaching Carousel Turns

Chris Davies left the North London club earlier this month to take on a new challenge as Birmingham’s manager. Davies was a key figure at Spurs, working as senior assistant to head coach Postecoglou after joining last summer. His decision to move was impacted by previous attention from Championship club Swansea in December, before committing to St Andrew’s in June.

Matt Wells, a former Tottenham academy player and Under-18s coach, will take up Davies’ role. Wells, who returned to the club in April 2023, initially returned to assist Ryan Mason during his interim stint following Cristian Stellini’s exit. Wells has extensive coaching experience, having previously worked with Scott Parker at Fulham, Bournemouth, and Club Brugge.

New Additions Bolster Spurs’ Staff

In addition to Wells’ promotion, the Spurs are adding two new assistant coaches: Nick Montgomery and Sergio Raimundo. Montgomery, a former Scotland Under-21 international, joins Tottenham following a brief stint as manager of Scottish Premiership team Hibernian. Montgomery has a track record of success and skill from his time with the Central Coast Mariners in Australia, where he played and coached.

Raimundo, on the other hand, brings vast coaching experience from Benfica’s academy as well as experiences in Senegal, Brazil, Canada, and Austria. His work with Montgomery at Hibs and the Central Coast Mariners demonstrates a great coaching synergy that Spurs believe will translate effectively in the Premier League.

Tottenham’s Tactical Future

Postecoglou showed confidence in the new appointments, saying, “I’m thrilled that Matt has been appointed Senior Assistant Coach. He is an amazing young coach with a strong work ethic and attention to detail. He fully deserves this opportunity.” The head coach also welcomed the new assistants with open arms, saying, “It’s also great to have Nick and Sergio join the Club, and they will add to the talented coaches we already have on staff here.”

He went on to say, “Both Nick and Sergio have extensive teaching experience over the years. They have already displayed a tremendous desire to nurture young players while also implementing a football style that I believe will improve the environment we have created. I am looking forward to working with them.”

Looking Ahead

Tottenham Hotspur’s coaching personnel is still being restructured, but the club’s goal remains the same: to construct a strong foundation that supports their tactical aspirations and develops potential. With the Premier League season approaching, these strategic backroom additions demonstrate Tottenham’s dedication to maintaining a competitive edge and reaching new heights under Postecoglou’s supervision.
