‘Resilient’ Southampton man must now step up against Birmingham City following injury news

‘Resilient’ Southampton man must now step up against Birmingham City following injury news.

Southampton will try to end their recent dismal trend on Saturday afternoon.

The Saints will play away from St Mary’s again, this time in the Midlands against Birmingham City.

Russell Martin’s side comes into that game after losing 3-0 to Liverpool in the FA Cup fifth round on Wednesday.

As a result, they have lost three consecutive games and four of their past five in all competitions.

However, after suffering an injury at Anfield in midweek, Southampton will be missing one crucial player when they face the Blues.

Kyle Walker-Peters Injury Update
Aside from their defeat at Liverpool on Wednesday, the Saints did suffer one setback: Kyle Walker-Peters was injured.

The right-back had entered the game as a second-half substitute. However, he only lasted 17 minutes before being forced off with a knock.

Martin initially admitted that he wasn’t sure what the injury was.

However, during his press conference on Friday, the Southampton manager revealed that the setback is not serious. It will, however, keep him out of action this weekend.

As a result, one more Saints player may be forced into action, perhaps unexpectedly, at St Andrew’s.

James Bree could need to step up for Southampton.
Walker-Peters’ departure creates a vacancy at right-back for Martin to fill.

Walker-Peters has started all of Southampton’s Championship games this season.

However, with that streak coming to an end on Saturday, James Bree may have to step up again.

That game marked the 26-year-old’s first senior appearance since December, following a lengthy absence due to injury.

During that era, the right-back missed 13 first-team games. He then lasted less than an hour in his return to Anfield before being replaced by Walker-Peters.

Given how consistent and dependable Walker-Peters has been for Southampton this season, they may have anticipated this was the beginning of gently easing Bree back into action.

However, with the new injury update, the former Luton Town player may have to jump back into the starting lineup on Saturday as the club’s other senior right-back.

That could be a tall order for Bree so quickly after returning after such a long absence. That is bolstered by Birmingham City’s threats on the left side, where Siriki Dembele and Jordan James may cause problems.

However, given their limited options, they may have to ask him to do that.

Martin has already described Bree  As a’resilient’ player this season. Now it appears that Southampton will need him to demonstrate that talent again this weekend.
