Another addition to the coaching staff.

Mick Lombardi, former offensive coordinator for the Las Vegas Raiders, is apparently being hired by the San Francisco 49ers, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area. As of now, it is unknown what function the 49ers have hired Lombardi to fill.

That should be announced shortly, but I believe Lombardi will replace Klint Kubiak as the 49ers passing game coordinator. Kubiak left the 49ers to become offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints.

Throughout his NFL coaching career, Lombardi has definitely come full circle. He began his coaching career with the 49ers in 2013. He began as an assistant to then-head coach Jim Harbaugh, progressing to offensive assistant in 2014, defensive assistant in 2015, and offensive quality control coach in 2016.

In retrospect, Lombardi’s initial stint with the 49ers resembled musical chairs. After leaving San Francisco, Lombardi worked as an offensive assistant with the New York Jets from 2017 to 2018. He subsequently joined the New England Patriots in 2019 as an assistant quarterbacks coach before becoming a wide receivers coach in 2020 and 2021.

When Josh McDaniels became the Raiders’ head coach in 2022, Lombardi followed him as offensive coordinator until he was fired alongside McDaniels in the middle of the season. Lombardi was never the Raiders’ play-caller. During their time with the Raiders, McDaniels was in charge of these duties.

Again, I believe Lombardi will be hired as the Niners’ passing game coordinator. At the very least, he will be given the same assistant coach title as Anthony Lynn had before leaving to join the Washington Commanders.
