Report: Birmingham City appoints former Manchester City star…

Birmingham City are reportedly hiring Mike Rigg to work with the club’s academy.

According to The Telegraph, the former Manchester City sporting director will start his new role next month.

The Blues are currently seeking to secure their Championship status and are ranked 21st in the table. They are outside the drop zone based on goal differential.

Rigg’s arrival will strengthen the Midlands outfit’s youth setup, and he will oversee the progression of young players into the first team. In addition to his time at Etihad Stadium, he has previously played for Fulham and Burnley.

Birmingham has produced some great talents in recent years, most notably Jude Bellingham. Jordan James and George Hall have recently been promoted to the first team.

Gary Rowett has been brought back to St Andrews in a last-ditch effort to avert relegation to League One. The former Derby County, Stoke City, and Millwall manager will take charge of this Friday’s vital match against QPR as the Blues aim to return to winning ways. They then play Preston North End at home on Easter Monday.

The new boss is excited to get going and said last week: “Everyone knows the history that I have with the Club. I have seen it as its very, very best. I have seen what it’s like to try and turn this situation around and how positive that can be for everyone connected to the Club. Part of my motivation really was just to try and bring back some of that positivity.

“It’s quite simple: simply win some football games and make sure we’re doing everything we can to turn this team around and show what I believe they’re capable of.

“There are very few clubs and very few fanbases I would have come back to do this for, but Birmingham City is certainly one of those.”
