“Relief”: The manager of Bournemouth gives his assessment of the “huge” victory over Burnley

Andoni Iraola acknowledged feeling a great deal of relief after Bournemouth overcame Burnley, another struggling team.

Philip Billing’s 45-yard chip allowed the Cherries to overcome Vincent Kompany’s team 2-1 despite falling behind early on.

After succeeding Gary O’Neil as manager of Bournemouth during the summer, it was Iraola’s first league victory.

Despite the early season, there was no reason to minimize the significance of this match as the Clarets were just one point and one position below them in the league table before kickoff.

However, the home team prevailed, moving up above Burnley and out of the bottom three.

“After this, I feel relieved,” Iraola remarked.

“I believe this was one we needed. We were clearly up against a team in a similar situation. It’s a major victory for us.

“After giving up the opening goal, we were pressing quite hard. Although it appeared that everything would be difficult, the first half in particular was excellent.

“We haven’t performed well, particularly at the rear. If we wish to keep winning, we must make these improvements.”

The VAR disagreement that resulted in Jay Rodriguez’s late leveler being called offside dominated the post-match discussion.

It took about seven minutes to do the check, which infuriated both benches.

Iraola commented on the VAR review, saying: “I’m not sure how many [minutes] it was. I was advising them to take their time and choose wisely. The apology is not something we want to hear.”
