Rafael Nadal has formally announced his departure from the 2024 US Open, shocking the tennis world.

On Wednesday, August 7, the 22-time Grand Slam champion announced his withdrawal from the tournament on Instagram, claiming an inability to compete at his peak level as the primary reason. The decision is a watershed moment in the career of the 38-year-old tennis icon, who has won the U.S. Open four times—in 2010, 2013, 2017, and 2019.

Nadal’s decision to miss the U.S. Open follows a difficult experience at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, where he represented Spain. Despite his success, Nadal struggled in the tournament, losing in the quarterfinals against the Dutch combo Tallon Griekspoor and Wesley Koolhof on July 30. He was partnered with Carlos Alcaraz. To add to his chagrin, Nadal was eliminated early in the singles competition, falling in the second round against Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, who won the gold medal on August 4.

Hints of Doubt in Paris

While in Paris, Nadal’s participation in the US Open was already called into question. During a press conference, when asked about his Grand Slam plans, Nadal hesitated before responding, “Looks like not. But I’ll let you know soon.” His statements, obtained by the Associated Press, alluded to the difficult decision he was about to face. “I can’t give you a clear answer right now. I need more time, but [it] appears difficult to me,” he said, contemplating on the gravity of his decision.

Fond Memories and a Difficult Goodbye

In his Instagram post, Nadal highlighted his love for the US Open, particularly the lively ambiance of the night sessions at Arthur Ashe Stadium. “I have amazing memories of the tournament and will miss those electric and special night sessions in NYC at Ashe,” stated the athlete. Despite his enthusiasm for the competition, Nadal recognized that he would be unable to provide his best performance this time around, which led to his decision to quit.

“Thanks to all of my US fans in particular; I will miss you all and see you another time,” he continued, expressing his deep gratitude to his supporters. “Best of lucks to all for the always amazing US Open!”

Looking Ahead: The Laver Cup

While Nadal’s absence from the U.S. Open will be missed, the tennis great has promised fans that his 2024 season is far from over. Nadal has confirmed that he will compete in the Laver Cup, which will take place in Berlin from September 20 to September 22.

The event will offer Nadal another opportunity to showcase his skills on the court, and fans can look forward to seeing him compete again shortly.
