Rafael Nadal has yet to clarify whether he will retire following his Olympic Games campaign, but there is suggestion he could be set to join Swiss superstar Federer in his decision to call it quits.

Rafael Nadal could follow in the footsteps of fellow tennis legend Roger Federer by retiring during this year’s Laver Cup.

After losing 6-2, 6-4 against Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram in Paris, the Spanish star has yet to confirm whether he would retire from tennis. Following the loss, Nadal, who also fell to Novak Djokovic in the singles, gave an emotional gesture to the Court Philippe Chatrier crowd, prompting many fans to speculate that it could be his last appearance on the court.

However, the ‘King of Clay’ remained tight-lipped about his future plans following the match, fuelling speculation that his final professional game could be at the Laver Cup in September due to a gap in his schedule. The Laver Cup is especially significant for Nadal because it is where his close friend and former competitor, Federer, decided to retire.

Nadal even teamed up with the Swiss maestro for his final match, a doubles defeat against Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe. Following his defeat in Paris, he remained evasive on whether he would come to the United States to prepare for the US Open, but the 38-year-old tennis star was non-committal, stating that he needs a break to plan ahead, writes the Express.

“It appears not, but I’ll let you know soon. I can’t give you a clear response right now; I need some time. “But it looks difficult to me,” he remarked. “We’ll see if I keep playing the normal tour.”

Nadal, who has dominated Roland-Garros like no other player, also hinted that his Olympic appearance could have been his last, while professing tremendous affection for the stadium that witnessed his rise to prominence. “If that’s the last time, it’s an unforgettable feeling and emotions,” Nadal recalled.

“They have shown me love and support every second I’ve been on court. It’s quite special to feel that way in this location.”

Federer, who retired at the Laver Cup two years ago, has a close relationship with Nadal. Their closeness has also fueled talk that the Swiss legend will make a stunning return to play alongside Nadal at the tournament, reflecting Nadal’s loving tribute to him.

The event will be held at the Uber Arena in Berlin, Germany, from September 20th to 22nd, and many fans believe it will be the conclusion of the 22-time Grand Slam winner’s career. Andy Roddick, a former world number one, shares this belief.

On his podcast, he stated, “The Laver Cup could be a celebration.” Hopefully, we’ll see him in the big final again. I do not know. It seems like this could be the end.”

It’s unclear whether Nadal will retire in Berlin. However, after the Olympics, he freely declared that he is no longer competing for results and trophies as his career comes to an end. Instead, he seeks “experiences” and the feelings that competitive tennis provides, rather than the glory of success.

“At this stage of my career, I play for feelings, I play for emotions more than for results,” stated the musician. “I’ve won more in my career than I could have imagined. For me, it’s about having new experiences.”
