QB claims he was deceived about the Vikings trade by the Cardinals coach

Arizona Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon allegedly deceived Josh Dobbs, the new quarterback for the Vikings, in the days preceding the trade deadline.

Josh Dobbs was asked to fill in for the Minnesota Vikings in Week 9, just over a week after he was traded from the Arizona Cardinals to the Minnesota Vikings in the last hours of the NFL trade deadline, following rookie Jaren Hall’s concussion. After Kirk Cousins suffered a season-ending torn achilles, Minnesota was forced to sign Josh Dobbs to start for the Vikes, but it was anticipated that Dobbs would gradually take over as the starting quarterback.

Instead, he’s unexpectedly thrust into action against the Atlanta Falcons, but sometimes diving into the deep end of the pool is the best way to learn how to swim, according to every old person who talks about how they learned to swim.

(From the sounds of it, parents used to haphazardly toss their children into pools and ponds and lakes and hope they would figure out a way not to drown. This seems outrageously problematic.)

On Sunday afternoon, Josh Dobbs did not drown. Dobbs kept his arms and legs moving, pulling the Vikings out of the deep end and putting them squarely in the center of the NFC playoff chase with a remarkable performance that has been praised even by NASA. One of the many fascinating details of this narrative that has just lately come to light is the fact that Dobbs was unaware, right up until the deadline, that he was going to be traded. Dobbs even claims that Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon informed him that he would not be sold, even though the team was considering moving on to youngster Clayton Tune, in an interview with The Torchbearers Podcast.

“We’re going to start Clayton Tune,” said JG (Jonathan Gannon), the head coach in Arizona, when I visited the facility on Monday. Along with the torchbearers, Dobbs shared. “Wwoke up Tuesday morning with a text from my agent saying, ‘You could be traded today because it’s the trade deadline,'” he continued to explain. Here’s what’s really interesting: at our discussion in Arizona, JG told me straight to my face that he was staying in Arizona and would not be traded or dismissed.

Although this may not be the best look for Jonathan Gannon or the Arizona Cardinals, Dobbs, a seventh-year veteran who has already played for seven different teams, is aware of the business side of the NFL. And if he harbors any resentment toward the Cardinals organization, it should gradually subside given that they gave him the chance to play for a Minnesota playoff club.
