“Public shame…”: Couple gamble over Seahawks’ game v 49ers

One Seattle fan found the 49ers’ Thanksgiving-day thrashing of the Seahawks particularly stinging.

Following his team’s 31–13 defeat on Thursday, Jason Irwin spent five hours standing on a street corner in Auburn, Washington. He had on a sandwich board sign with the words, “I Purdy much lost a bet to my wife” on one side and, “Did the 49ers just score again?” on the other.

Jen Irwin, his wife, is a 49ers supporter. Every time the Niners play the Seahawks, the pair has established a custom of making outlandish wagers. Over the years, a friendly annual wager has grown significantly.

It wasn’t the worst bet Jason has ever lost to his wife—not even the sandwich board public humiliation.

On January 14, following the 49ers’ 41-23 victory in the NFC wild card round, Jason was forced to have a tattoo of Sourdough Sam.
