Pete Carroll Surprisingly Names Two Seahawks Defenders on the Radio

The Seattle Seahawks’ 28-16 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Week 14 came down to big plays.

Drew Lock, the 49ers’ backup quarterback, had a few, while Brock Purdy and the offense had more. After the team’s fourth consecutive loss, head coach Pete Carroll went on his radio show on Monday morning and did something he rarely does: he specifically mentioned players like Jamal Adams and Riq Woolen.

Pete Carroll Called out Jamal Adams and Riq Woolen

Big plays cost the Seahawks against the 49ers in Week 14.On the first offensive play of the game, Christian McCaffrey ripped off a 72-yard run, Deebo Samuel caught and ran for a 54-yard touchdown on third down, and George Kittle’s 44-yard touchdown at the start of the fourth quarter pushed the game from a five-point affair to the final score.

The head coach wasn’t shy in calling out the Seahawks defenders responsible for these game-changing plays during his weekly appearance on The Pete Carroll Show with Mike Salk and Brock Huard (the latter of whom was out ill Monday) on Seattle Sports radio.

“When the time came for those practice opportunities, we didn’t take them seriously enough to make the impression, ‘I gotta make this play.'” Carroll added, “It’s Deebo coming across on a deep cross right to Jamal [Adams].” “That’s something we’ve noticed and are working on.” It should never have happened, especially on 3rd-and-13 or 3rd-and-11, whatever it was.”

“When Kittle gets behind us on that, the other one is on the right side.” “We saw that happen last year, and we corrected it all through training,” Carroll explained. “And [Riq Woolen] did it wrong. He was swept up in the play fake. He’s not supposed to be a part of the act.”

Finally, Carroll summarized by adding that these two defensive backs in particular need to improve overall.

“We need to practice better and cleaner. We need to make sure Jamal gets his reps in practice so he can execute and get the timing right. Riq has to make his move. That’s his only one. “It’s a discipline play,” Carroll said Salk before adding that there will be some changes in the future, but he declined to elaborate.

The Seahawks are in the Worst Stretch of the Carroll Era

As infrequently as Pete Carroll criticizes his players in the public, he does something even less frequently: Lose four games in a row. In fact, it has never happened in his 14 years as Seattle’s head coach.

The previous time that happened to Carroll was in 2001, his first season as head coach of the USC Trojans. Carroll hasn’t suffered four straight losses as an NFL coach since losing his final five games as head coach of the New York Jets in 1994.

When Salk asked Carroll what his “level of frustration” is, the coach replied, “I’m — it’s up.” “I’ll be there.”

Unfortunately for Carroll and his Seahawks, the team will be favored to match Carroll’s previous high mark of failure in Week 15 when they face the Philadelphia Eagles. According to FanDuel, the Eagles opened as -3.5 favorites against the Seahawks on Monday Night Football on December 18.

However, the Eagles are also struggling, having lost their last two games and just avoided a three-game skid with an overtime comeback win over the Buffalo Bills in Week 12.

One ray of hope for Seahawks supporters is that Heavy Sports’ estimates, powered by Quarter 4, put Seattle as a -3-point underdog, with a 41% chance of winning the game outright.
