Penei Sewell’s status has been improved on the Detroit Lions injury report

The Detroit Lions are still a healthy club as the season nears its end, and they got a little healthier on Thursday.

Penei Sewell, right tackle, has been promoted to full practice participant, and his participation for the big game against the Minnesota Vikings is not in doubt. Sewell hasn’t missed a snap since his rookie season, but he’s been dealing with shoulder soreness this week and was held out on Wednesday as a result.

Sewell was chosen to the Pro Bowl last season, but has performed even better this year. According to Pro Football Focus, he has only allowed one sack all season and is the league’s top offensive lineman.

“He was a heck of a player the first two years, but I think he’s taken some coaching points — and they were minutiae for him because he was already one of the top tackles in the league in my opinion after year two — and he’s really taken it to another level, particularly in the run game,” Ben Johnson, the team’s offensive coordinator, said. “We asked him to try some techniques that he hadn’t tried before.” In San Francisco, we always compare him to Trent Williams.
That man is on another level, and we believe Penei has the potential to be that type of player, but I believe he’s done a nice job for us in pass pro. It’s difficult to imagine him putting pressure on the quarterback right now. He performs an excellent job there. So he’s done well in both areas, and his hands have improved as well. We just haven’t brought it up on the field yet, so you never know.”

Center Frank Ragnow did receive some rest on Thursday, but he’s still scheduled to play in Minnesota, and what else would you expect from a guy who just played a week after having meniscus surgery?

As a result, the Lions are set to field their top offensive line in back-to-back games for the first time this season.

Cornerback The only players who did not practice on Thursday were Jerry Jacobs (hamstring) and tight end Brock Wright (hip). This week, neither has dressed.
