Paul Warne is not shocked that investors are looking to invest in Derby County, and he believes that being more “powerful” in the transfer market would be “great” in his role as head coach.

David Clowes, the Rams’ owner, is willing to sell up to 80% of his shares in order to help the Derby take the next step in their long-term goal to return to the Premier League.

Talks have already begun with non-domestic investors, but no agreement is close, as the club is currently supported for this season and the next two under the current business plan. That gives Clowes more time to evaluate the suitability of potential investors, but Warne says headlines about the club’s investment search will not distract him.

“To be honest, I didn’t know the story had circulated, so that’s one good thing, but it doesn’t really affect me,” he told me. “I just get on with the business of looking after the team; the same way, you don’t get too bothered when you’re linked to this player or someone is after one of your own.

“Historically, a lot has happened at this football club.” In recent years, but I believe everyone is working to get this team back to the Premier League, which will require a lot of wins as well as a lot of money.

“It’s not surprising that individuals want to invest in this football club since it’s a good one. But it has no actual effect on me, so I don’t worry about it.

“If someone came in and invested in the club, allowing us to be more powerful in transfer windows or whatever from a head coach standpoint, that would be fantastic. I’ve truly enjoyed working with David and will continue to do so until someone tells me otherwise. I’m not trying to be too sweet in my response, and while that is a bit of a straight bat, it makes no difference to me.”
