Packers cornerback gets yet another injury when he rolls his ankle during a jog-through
Alexander has missed nine games this season.
The Green Bay Packers’ defense was already under scrutiny for its ability to stay up with the Dallas Cowboys, and those concerns are likely to grow after Jaire Alexander injured his ankle on Wednesday.
The All-Pro cornerback stepped on a teammate’s foot during the Packers’ jog-through, injuring one of his ankles. This jeopardizes his availability for the wild-card weekend, when Green Bay travels to face the second-seeded Cowboys.
“So, it was kind of a freak deal yesterday,” Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said Thursday via ESPN. “I mean, ’cause you guys saw we had mostly a jog-through and just, unfortunately [he] stepped on somebody’s foot and rolled his ankle. I know he’s doing everything he can to be available, and I’d say it’s day-to-day and we thought it was best obviously today to have him not practice.”
Alexander has been injured three times this season, with the previous two setbacks causing him to miss a total of nine games. Alexander suffered a back injury when he collided with practice squad quarterback Alex McGough, and he later damaged his shoulder against the Los Angeles Rams on Nov. 5.
While Alexander did not speak to the media, Packers reporters observed no evident difficulties with his ankle or a boot.
When asked how often a player has been injured during a half-speed drill, LaFleur stated that this is an unusual occurrence.
“Well, it’s happened,” he said. “It doesn’t happen very regularly and it was just … it was a freaky deal. It’s not like he was, I mean he was locked in, focused, doing everything we ask him to do and unfortunately just stepped on somebody’s foot and it happened.”
