Once highly rated Birmingham City striker makes a non-league switch

Isaac Vassell, a former Birmingham City striker, has signed with National League South side Bath City.

Vassell has been without a club for over a year and a half after being released by Championship side Cardiff City, and his last appearance for the Bluebirds came in the 2019-20 season.

He only appeared three times for the Welsh outfit over a three-year period, so the move is somewhat surprising.

Despite not having played professionally for several seasons, Vassell could be a good addition to the National League South side. He offers plenty of EFL experience to a team striving for its first promotion to the National League since 2012.

The Romans are now in a terrific position, sitting fourth in the table and unbeaten in their previous six. They’ll be hoping that signing Vassell will improve their chances, but it’s undoubtedly a risky move.

The 30-year-old footballer was once highly regarded. He started with Luton Town in League Two and moved to Birmingham City in the 2017/18 season for a reported fee of over £1 million.

The Birmingham Mail reported that then-manager Harry Redknapp expected him to be a significant part of the team. The big move for the striker did not pan out, and he was never at his best for Birmingham or Cardiff City.

The National League South may be his current level, but his form is unknown given how the previous two seasons have gone.

Writer’s perspective

Given the amount of money spent on Vassell, Birmingham fans may tremble when hearing his name. Although his career hasn’t gone as planned, he attributes much of that to ongoing injury issues.

This could be the former Blues player’s last chance, and if he can recreate his time at Luton, he could be a very promising addition for the sixth-tier club.

That being said, his recent record is hardly inspiring, but the club is in a position to take risks, and this appears to be a huge one.
