Ohio State may not be finished recruiting defensive linemen in…

There are two huge names to keep an eye on for a possible switch to the Buckeyes before National Signing Day in February.

Ohio State’s defensive line haul in 2024 is far from adequate. Following early signing day, the Buckeyes officially signed only two defensive lineman. While Ryan Day may argue that this group meets the program’s strict standards, this is just not true.

One is five-star recruit Eddrick Houston, who is ranked No. 33 overall and No. 7 edge rusher in the cycle, while the other is three-star Eric Mensah, who is ranked No. 90 DL nationwide. Ohio State had one of the country’s top defensive tackles committed until last month, when five-star Justin Scott flipped his promise to Miami, and appeared to be on the verge of landing a pair of four-stars in Carlon Jones and Amaris Williams before they committed to USC and Auburn, respectively.

Instead, it’s a two-man class, which, even with an elite player like Houston coming to Columbus, is simply unacceptable from Larry Johnson, especially given the previous classes’ results. Ohio State has only added 10 defensive lineman since the 2022 recruiting class, including five edge players and five defensive tackles. Omari Abor, one of those ends, has since transferred, and if both J.T. Tuimoloau and Jack Sawyer decide to leave for the NFL, the Buckeyes might be down to four scholarship defensive ends, one of which is true freshman Houston.

Ohio State has entered the last few cycles desperately in need of defensive line reinforcements, and has gone away virtually empty-handed. The 2023 class was deep, but three of the four newcomers were defensive tackles. Adding a two-man class with only one defensive end while potentially losing both starting edge rushers from last season appears to be a recipe for disaster, which is exacerbated by some of the big swings and misses Johnson has taken at a handful of top national prospects each of the last few classes.

Fortunately, not all hope is gone just yet, as good news on the defensive line could be on the way for the Buckeyes. There is a fair probability that at least one of Tuimoloau or Sawyer will return in 2024, and there have been rumors that Johnson and Ohio State are not done recruiting in this cycle.

There are two huge players who have committed elsewhere but will not sign their LOIs until National Signing Day in February. The Buckeyes can continue to try to influence them towards Columbus until writing meets paper, and given the current position, they would be wise to do so.
