Ohio State football player admits to having no money while making bold claims about…

While making strong accusations about Miami’s unscrupulous recruiting, an Ohio State football player admits to having little money.

In a recent podcast interview prior to the Cotton Bowl, Ohio State offensive tackle Carson Hinzman was far too honest. His interview with ‘The B&B Podcast’ was quietly removed from Amazon and YouTube, although it is still available on Listen Notes.

The University of Miami and its recruitment activities were the subject of one particular accusation. The Hurricanes, according to Hinzman, are giving large Name, Image, and Likeness (read: money) packages to elite prospects who change their pledge at the buzzer.

While this isn’t really breaking news, given college football programs all across the country are leveraging money in the current era, it’s probably not something he should have stated on such a large platform. Even if it were/is correct.

Carl Hinzman, who started at center for the Buckeyes during the regular season, claimed his club was looking for an offensive lineman who ended up going to Miami. He didn’t identify anyone, but the Hurricanes signed only three high school offensive linemen in the recruiting Class of 2024 — and five overall if transfers are counted.

  • Indiana IOL transfer Zach Carpenter (three-star)
  • Three-star IOL Nino Francavilla
  • Three-star OT Juan Minaya
  • Three-star OT Deryc Plazz
  • JUCO OT transfer Markel Bell (four-star)

According to Hinzman, one of the five players wanted $1 million in NIL money per year. Because that is not what Ohio State does, the unnamed player later committed to Miami.

He claims that the Buckeyes don’t spend much money. Not at all on offensive linemen.

Ohio State doesn’t really like to pay guys a whole lot […]

Compared to other schools, that’s probably why we don’t really get those kind of recruits. But at the same time, we don’t really want those recruits that are just in it for the money.

— Carson Hinzman, via the B&B Podcast

Within that same portion of the conversation, Hinzman did mention two other recruits by name.

  • Four-star running back Jordan Lyle
  • Five-star defensive lineman Justin Scott

Lyle, a native of Florida, has committed to play for Ohio State in April 2023. From September until December, Miami worked hard to bring the No. 25-ranked running back on campus many times. He finally decommitted from the Buckeyes and signed with the Hurricanes just before the Early Signing Period began.

Scott, who is from Illinois, committed to play for Ohio State in July. Miami pushed hard to bring the No. 7-ranked talent in the country to campus but were unsuccessful. At the end of November, he decommitted from the Buckeyes and committed to the Hurricanes.

Hinzman said that their actions were NIL because Mario Cristobal’s program gave both Lyle and Scott a lot of money. They apparently flipped because Miami offered a higher salary than Ohio State.

Hinzman’s remarks demonstrate an inability to adjust to current ways of doing things. Especially in terms of recruiting. He also conceded that the Buckeyes are broke while praising the Hurricanes’ ability to recruit great talent with huge funds. Not a good look!
