Ohio State Buckeyes QB room strength is demonstrated by lack of transfers

All five Ohio State Buckeyes quarterbacks—including those who have little chance of starting this season—opted to stay on the squad.

The Spring transfer portal has officially been escaped by the Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback room.

Early on Wednesday, the second and last chance for players to go before the upcoming season ended. Six Buckeyes, including receiver Kyion Grayes, safety Ja’Had Carter, and running back Dallan Hayden, decided to try their luck with the gateway.

Remarkably, none of Ohio State’s five quarterbacks decided to transfer. All of the signal-callers made the decision to remain with the Buckeyes even though they were aware that they might not all play this season.

Ohio State’s quarterbacking department had an unsatisfactory year just past. Fans chastised former starter Kyle McCord after a few misplaced errors, while sophomores Devin Brown and Lincoln Kienholz found it difficult to establish themselves in the 2023 Cotton Bowl.

The Buckeyes’ approach this offseason has been to sign Prentiss “Air” Noland and Julian Sayin, two highly sought-after prospects, and add Kansas State quarterback Will Howard, a fifth-year player. Ohio State can now legitimately claim to have the greatest quarterback room in the nation.

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day told reporters prior to the opening of the Spring portal window that he did not anticipate many, if any, of his players leaving. It appears that Day was right when he indicated that the players on his squad weren’t only in it for the chance to start.

“We talk about why do you play so hard here at Ohio State, it’s because of the brotherhood, the love of your teammates,” Day stated in the beginning of April. In that sense, I believe we have a strong bunch. I believe that the boys recognize the potential this season, want to be here, and understand what it means to be a Buckeye. Thus, I don’t see many men who are merely trying to get away.”
