Sources have told Football Insider that Nottingham Forest defender Aaron Donnelly is in advanced talks to join Dundee on a permanent basis.

Donnelly has entered the final year of his contract at the City Ground, and Forest have officially approved his departure.

The 21-year-old spent last season on loan with Dundee, making 21 appearances in the Scottish Premiership.

His performances during his loan stay made him a priority in the summer transfer window, and a deal is now on the verge of completion after positive talks between all sides.

After agreeing on the conditions of his contract, the centre-back will head to the Riverside Training Hub for a medical.

Nottingham Forest star Aaron Donnelly in advanced talks with Dundee

Donnelly joined Forest from Northern Irish team Dungannon Swifts in 2019, before signing his first professional contract with the club in 2021.

He made his maiden senior appearance in the EFL Cup in 2022, then signed a contract extension later that year, but has not appeared since.

His loan move to Dundee saw him make 21 appearances and establish himself as an important element of Tony Docherty’s team.

The defender had a rough start to his career in Scotland, appearing in only three of the first 13 games, but he established himself later in the season, appearing in 13 of the last 15 games.

As a result, his permanent signing has become a top priority for Dundee as they aim to build on their excellent campaign last season.

Donnelly helped the team to finish sixth last season, having been promoted the year before, as they look to become regular fixtures in the Premiership.
