‘Not good enough’: Vincent Kompany’s forceful reaction following Burnley’s dreadful loss to Brentford

A determined Vincent Kompany acknowledged that his Burnley team’s appalling performance against Brentford was far from satisfactory.

The Clarets’ lopsided 3-0 loss to Brentford away this season marked their seventh loss in just nine games.

Kompany’s team had a chance to win at halftime and probably should have, but they were eventually put out of their misery. Instead, they made a brief attempt at a comeback.

“It’s simple, overall it’s not good enough,” Kompany admitted.

“After that, you start to analyze the specifics of the match, and in the first half, I believe that coming back at halftime with a 1-0 loss is flattering to us. There might have been more.

We came out and did exactly what we ought to have done from the beginning in the second half. Our game appeared to have a flow to it; we made opportunities and recovered a lot of balls. We had a brief period of really good play, but there are times when we miss opportunities and times when they score a fantastic goal to put the game just a bit beyond our reach.

“But even in that case, we have a very good chance of winning 2-0 and are still fairly dangerous.” Naturally, though, if you don’t seize the opportunity…

“However, I don’t think we can accept what happened with the red card and going down to 10 men.”

“You can’t have 45 minutes like we did in the first half; I’ve given you honest feedback, but anytime in the Premier League, I’m telling you for 45 minutes it wasn’t good enough.”

Burnley’s goal conceded rate, which stands at 23 in just nine games, is one of their main worries.

“It’s been that kind of start to the season for us—we’ve had [Hjalmar] Ekdal out with an injury, [Jordan] Beyer out with an injury,” Kompany stated.

“But in the end, I want to go back to what’s really important: even though you lose this game—and we all knew that in the Premier League, especially for the promoted teams, things would always be difficult—the next one might turn out differently.

“We must put all of our attention into the upcoming game and ensure that we learn from this.”
