The Indianapolis Colts will rely largely on a defensive line that has the potential to be one of the finest in the NFL as the new season begins.

With a strong core of DeForest Buckner, Grover Stewart, Samson Ebukam, Dayo Odeyingbo, and Kwity Paye, the Colts selected rookie edge rusher Laiatu Latu in the first round.

However, one NFL observer believes that a blockbuster trade for a star defensive lineman would be necessary to elevate the defensive line to elite status.

Bleacher Report’s Ryan Fowler proposed that the Colts deal a 2025 second-round and a 2026 fourth-round choice to the Washington Commanders in exchange for star Jonathan Allen.

Adding a defender with the skill set of Jonathan Allen could be the addition that elevates the Colts in a loaded AFC. The two-time Pro Bowler is a force within the interior that has evolved into one of the leagues premier three-down defensive tackles.

As the Colts look to keep pace with the Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars and an improving Tennessee Titans roster in the AFC South, adding Allen to the mix is the type of move that elevates a rosters performance ceiling.

While this is an unlikely move, it’s an entertaining one to consider. Trading two draft selections for a top defensive lineman like Allen would strengthen an already formidable defensive line.

Imagine an inner trio of Buckner, Stewart, and Allen, with Ebukam, Paye, Odeyingbo, and Latu on the verge. Tyquan Lewis also adds depth.

Allen is under contract for the next two seasons, with cap hits of $21.4 million in 2024 and $23 million in 2025. It is financially viable, but it would have a significant impact on the cap.

Allen has shown to be a successful pass rusher and would thrive in Gus Bradley’s attacking front. Over the last three seasons, he ranked 14th, 10th, and second in total pressures among defensive tackles.

It’s probably a pipe dream, but it’s a great possibility to think about ahead of training camp.
