Running back Jonathan Taylor of the Indianapolis Colts, the 2021 NFL rushing champion, is coming off a great performance on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
In just 15 attempts, Taylor gained 91 yards and two scores as the Indianapolis Colts won their third straight game.
His prize? Following the game, Taylor was subjected to the NFL’s second “random” drug test of the season.

The league also put Taylor to the test after his performance on October 22, when he scored a touchdown and gained 75 yards in a defeat against the Cleveland Browns. That occurred three games after he made his comeback from an ankle injury and a holdout from the Colts’ organization after a turbulent offseason involving several contract disputes.
Taylor has been his usual self more recently after faltering somewhat in his first two games back after being shelved (37 yards on 14 carries).
Jonathan Taylor stats (past 5 games): 377 rushing yards, 4.4 average, 5 TD
Indianapolis is currently 6-5 on the season and riding a three-game winning streak thanks to Taylor’s effort. The young Colts would face the Kansas City Chiefs in the wild card round of the AFC Playoffs as the seventh seed if the season ended tonight.
The NFL typically prefers to “randomly” test players based on extraordinary performances. This previous week, Taylor did not record the most impressive stats for a running back.

That went to Christian McCaffrey of the San Francisco 49ers (139 total yards, 2 TD) and Kyren Williams, a rookie player for the Los Angeles Rams (204 total yards, 2 TD). As far as we know, neither player underwent testing.
We’re left wondering what the current situation is between Jonathan Taylor and the NFL. Looks a lot less random than what the league would have us think.
