NFL Draft News: Commanders are visiting J.J. McCarthy in Michigan

J.J. McCarthy’s popularity has only grown.

The former Michigan quarterback is apparently ranked much higher on many NFL teams’ boards than the general public is willing to accept. Under head coach Jim Harbaugh, he guided the Michigan Wolverines to the national championship. McCarthy has paid visits to NFL teams as they prepare for next month’s draft in Detroit, Michigan. According to Jordan Schultz, he met the New York Giants last week, and the Washington Commanders are supposedly heading down to Ann Arbor, MI to meet him for dinner on Thursday, the night before his Pro Day. Washington interviewed McCarthy at the NFL Scouting Combine, the first of several Q&A sessions with several teams.

The Washington Commanders have the second overall pick in this year’s draft and are likely to take a quarterback after finishing 4-13 last season. There are opportunities for moves both up (probably for USC quarterback Caleb Williams) and down (for additional draft money in a recalibrating year), but Adam Peters’ regime has been very quiet during free agency. The teams are always lying, and the fans and media are always speculating.

The Commanders traded Sam Howell to the Seahawks after signing veteran quarterback Marcus Mariota in free agency. They need to add at least one more quarterback to their roster before offseason workouts begin. Most people believe they will take either LSU’s Jayden Daniels or North Carolina’s Drake Maye with the second choice. The visit with J.J. McCarthy is most likely due diligence in case they receive a trade down offer they cannot reject, but new GM Adam Peters and his team may not have this year’s QB crop ranked as draft experts believe. This is Peters’ first chance to be an NFL general manager, as well as new managing partner Josh Harris’ first full offseason as team owner.
