NFL: Colts seen as landing spot for star receiver

According to NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah, the Indianapolis Colts are making a huge trade to acquire an offensive weapon.

The Indianapolis Colts begin their 2024 NFL Draft tomorrow, and they have several roster needs to address. Wide receiver is one of, if not the most crucial, positions. While Indianapolis could select a good pass-catcher in the draft, one could also be acquired through a trade.

According to NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah, the Colts are one of two teams with the highest chances of acquiring top San Francisco 49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk.

The Jacksonville Jaguars had already signed former Buffalo Bills wide receiver Gabe Davis in free agency, but they lost Calvin Ridley to the Tennessee Titans. Given the hole Ridley is leaving, this makes sense provided they can provide adequate recompense. To be honest, it appears like the Jaguars would be better suited to execute this strategy than Indianapolis.

Aiyuk is coming off perhaps his greatest year, with 75 receptions for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns. However, if the Colts execute the move, Aiyuk is anticipated to sign a new contract, which may be worth more than $25 million per year. Given how much money Indianapolis has already spent on retaining its best players, this does not sound like a Chris Ballard move.

It’s exciting to consider what a player like Aiyuk could accomplish with Shane Steichen’s offense. Quarterback Anthony Richardson, running back Jonathan Taylor, and wide receivers Michael Pittman Jr. and Josh Downs would all benefit from having Aiyuk on the roster. However, don’t expect this type of trade to occur. In addition to the money owing to Aiyuk, Indy would most likely need to sell draft capital.

It will be interesting to watch as the Colts prepare to select the next generation of talent in the coming days.
