New faces at Georgia Bulldogs coaching staff during practice

Georgia co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach Travaris Robinson during Georgia’s practice session in Athens, Ga., on Tuesday, March 12, 2024.

It is inevitable for a thriving college football team to lose coaches during the off-season. There will be a lot of new faces in 2024 as a number of former Georgia coaches accepted offers with better prospects. The head coach of Georgia had nothing but admiration for everyone of them. Kirby Smart highlighted the enthusiasm that each of these coaches possesses, as well as their potential to succeed in their new roles at the university.

Travaris Robinson (Co-Defensive Coordinator/Safeties)

Among the coaches in the nation with the greatest connections is Travaris Robinson. Whatever team Robinson has been a part of, he has brought innumerable names to the table. Robinson played with the Tide for the previous two seasons. Kirby Smart discussed Robinson’s ties and knowledge of the “SEC Blueprint.” Dan Jackson praised Robinson’s enthusiasm repeatedly, stating, “He’s been incredible.” Every day, Coach T-Rob provides the juice. It appears that taking over for Will Muschamp went well. DB Robinson has been acquainted with Florida’s JaCorey Thomas for some time because of his tenure as Miami’s coach. Robinson and Muschamp are essentially the same person, Thomas informed the media.

Donte Williams (Cornerbacks)

Donte Williams was left with a mix of talent and established ties by former defensive back coach Fran Brown. Donte Williams, who was at USC when Brown left, was named Georgia’s replacement as soon as Brown left for Syracuse. After just a few weeks of spring exercises, several corners have expressed their admiration for Williams’ coaching methods. Williams’ presence on the field and his participation in certain player drills were mentioned by Kirby Smart. “Yes, I noticed that [Coach Donte Williams wearing a helmet during practice] too,” Smart responded. I’m not sure if that’s allowed. Given that he is wearing a helmet like an extra player, I really hope it is.

Given the possibility of some of those corners pursuing him, he could require it for protection. Julian Humphrey claims that the players adore this vibe and that it benefits them deeply personally.

James Coley (Wide Receivers)

Fans of Georgia are accustomed to seeing James Coley. Coley has previously served as Georgia’s offensive coordinator and receivers coach. During his tenure at Georgia, Coley most famously benched five-star wide receiver George Pickens, who later became a star player for the Dawgs. At the receiver position, Coley also signed notable players like Riley Ridley, Dominick Blaylock, Kearis Jackson, and Jeremiah Holloman. Coley is a top trail performer; his track record confirms this. Coley has been employed with Texas A&M since 2019. He was the tight end and wide receiver coach for the Aggies. Regarding Coley’s return to the team, Kirby Smart issued an official statement in February. “He is an amazing teacher and leader of young men,” said Smart.

His prior experience working for our team will ensure a smooth transfer. All in all, the transition appears to be going quite well. Throughout drills during a recent practice viewing session, Coley spoke loudly to the receivers.

Josh Crawford (Running Backs)

Josh Crawford will assume a new position for the Bulldogs after most recently serving as Georgia Tech’s wide receivers coach. Now, Crawford is taking up Dell McGee’s position as Georgia State’s head coach. Although replacing the great Dell McGee won’t be simple, Crawford will benefit greatly from his connections, particularly when it comes to recruiting. Crawford’s is well-connected throughout the Peach state.

He previously coached at: Georgia Tech, Western Kentucky, Colquitt County HS, Valdosta HS, Lee County HS, Jefferson County HS, Greater Atlanta Christian HS.

Although Crawford first interviewed for the receiver coaching post, Kirby Smart stated that he thinks this job will work just as well for him. “I don’t think you have to be any particular position if you’re a good football coach,” stated Smart. Regarding Crawford’s coaching efforts, Smart has been nothing but positive. Crawford and CB Coach Donte Williams were mentioned by Smart, who stated, “They’re here for everything we heard about them and the things we wanted them to come into our program for.” I’m quite proud of those two boys’ transitions thus far.
