‘Most palatable’: Dermot Gallagher renders a decision on penalty situations that occurred during Burnley’s matchup with West Ham

According to a renowned former referee, awarding Burnley another penalty following their heartbreaking loss to West Ham would have been the “easiest” call.

Luca Koleosho was clipped inside the box by Hammers defender Vladimir Coufal during the first half of the Clarets’ 2-1 loss at Turf Moor on Saturday, denying them a spot kick.

In the end, Vincent Kompany’s team was given a penalty at the beginning of the second half by referee Samuel Barrott. Once more, Mohammed Kudus was trampling on Koloesho’s toes.

Dermot Gallagher, a former official, examined the two instances on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch and proposed that the first one—the one that wasn’t granted—was comparable to the penalty given to Manchester United in their 3-0 victory over Everton.

Similar to Burnley, VAR intervened to overturn the on-field decision made against United when Anthony Martial was taken down by Ashley Young.

Gallagher commented on the Burnley call, saying, “I wonder if the referee looks back and thinks the other way around.”

“In my opinion, the simplest and most agreeable course of action in this case—the first penalty incident—is definitely to impose a penalty.
