Morsy: We just need to focus on ourselves

While Town fans eagerly monitor the league table after each round of results, particularly those of primary promotion contenders Leeds and Southampton, club captain Sam Morsy is sure that he and his teammates regard it as a waste of time.

The current battle to the Premier League is as fierce as any in recent memory, with the Blues joining last year’s relegated trio in the top four, and such is their domination that fifth-placed West Bromwich Albion are 14 points behind Town in fourth.

Morsy stated: “They’re tough teams, no doubt about it, but so are we. We all have various qualities; people talk about Leeds’ £70 million frontline, Southampton’s Premier League strikers, and so on, but we know what we have: very good players, a terrific manager, and a great team spirit.

“We’ve been together for a few years, and we’ve learned from our experience last season of going on a long unbeaten streak and remaining together. Everyone has their excellent points that they will hold onto, but I appreciate where we are now.

“We’re really strong, and we realize we’ll have to dig deep and accomplish a lot of things correctly.

“But we also understand that we must enjoy the road since we are nearing the end of February and the season will be over before we know it.

“We have to enjoy every moment, but we must first focus on ourselves.” Why would we focus on Southampton’s performance? We would be depressed every week! It was the longest unbeaten streak in their history.

“Obviously, we are aware of the other teams’ results, but we don’t put much effort into it. It would be a waste of our energy, which we need for our own games. That’s what we’ve been doing, and we’ve won the past two.

“Now we have two home games coming up and if we can win another tough game against Rotherham on Tuesday we’ll be in a really good position.”

Morsy is not taking anything for granted against the rock-bottom Millers, who have not won an away game in 31 attempts across all competitions since November 2022 and are presently 14 points from safety.

“We’ve just got to do our best,” he remarked. “We have to dig in and give everything we have; sometimes it will be enough, sometimes not. That’s what we have to keep doing; just keep pushing.”

When asked how he was dealing with the physical demands placed on the 32-year-old Morsy and his teammates, he replied, “I feel great. We have an excellent medical team, and I believe I am at an appropriate age to play football because there is so much available in terms of performance, nutrition, and recovery.

“There are so many paths you can take, and if you devote yourself, put your time and energy into it, and invest in it, you may heal very rapidly.

“Again, it’s an individual issue; it’s about a person’s integrity and what they do when no one is watching.

“Obviously, we’re all human, and we’ll all feel fatigued at times, but if you do the correct things, you can really take care of yourself. I’ll simply keep going, really.

“I’ve probably learnt from experience to approach one game at a time and not plan too far ahead when exhausted. Just continue to enjoy the journey and see what happens.”
