Michigan’s football defense loses additional key player

The 2023 Michigan football defense achieved a 15-0 record and won the national championship, making it one of the best defensive teams in college football history, if not the greatest.

However, Michigan’s strong defense lost another vital player yesterday when defensive back Quinten Johnson declared for the 2024 NFL draft.

Another key loss for Michigan’s football defense.

Jesse Minter had a strong defensive backfield last season, led by Mike Sainristil, Josh Wallace, and Will Johnson. In 2023-24, Quinten Johnson was a standout defensive back, especially given Michigan’s significant injury rate.

Quinten Johnson was a graduate (fifth-year) student last fall, earning his fourth varsity letter and third Academic All-Big Ten honor. He played in all 15 Michigan football games, contributing on special teams and as a cornerback. His season highlights included a pick against Bowling Green, a big hit against Ohio State, and a crucial forced fumble against Alabama (Rose Bowl).

Quinten Johnson is headed to the NFL Draft.

Quinten Johnson, who recorded 22 tackles, one interception, five pass breakups, and a forced fumble last season, has declared for the NFL draft. For the Michigan football defense, this increases the value of the defensive back position in the transfer portal when it reopens for the spring period, as the Wolverines try to rebuild their squad and compete for another National Championship this autumn.
