Michigan Wolverines Increase NIL Operations Despite Adjusting College Football Landscape

The Michigan Wolverines are among the most successful programs in college football history.

They adapted to the changing sports landscape. The school is having to adapt yet again. NIL reigns supreme in today’s college football landscape. If programs want to attract top talent, they must be able to compensate their athletes. Michigan took a significant step today when the institution announced plans to expand its NIL activities.

Michigan Wolverines expand NIL operations.
The institution has recruited Learfield and Altius Sports Partners to help manage its operations. These companies will handle the business aspect of the operations. Warde Manuel, Athletic Director, had this to say about the deal.

“I am pleased to announce this unique and strategic investment through a new agreement with Altius Sports Partners and the growth of our Learfield relationships. The dedicated roles through ASP and Learfield provide a crucial step forward in supporting and empowering our student-athletes while combining three powerful brands aligned to capitalize on the dynamic opportunities within the realm of NIL.”

The representatives will have direct access to the athletic director. Michigan might be demonstrating the future of college football.

Is This the Future?
NFL teams employ a general manager to handle their pay cap. This has a similar feel to it. ASP and Learfield will assist the institution in ensuring a constant inflow of revenue to help pay players. Ann Arbor may become a more appealing destination now that they have a mechanism in place to compensate participants. It’ll be fascinating to see if other programs follow suit, or if Michigan is doing something special.

NIL is here, whether we want it or not. Michigan is ensuring that they will be competitive for a long time. Will others adopt this model?
