Michigan Wolverines Are The Front Runners To Land A QB

Analysts examine how Michigan could sign one of the best players available overall on the portal.

According to early analysis on the college football transfer portal, Michigan is vying for UCLA quarterback Dante Moore. Cooper Petagna, a national recruiting analyst, stated on Transfer Portal Palooza that the Wolverines “need to find a way” to sign the former five-star.

Petagna remarked, “I love fit with Dante Moore and Michigan.” “Great teams operate in this way. The pieces of the puzzle don’t quite fit, but they still have to figure out a way to make these things function. You must figure out how to attract a man of Dante Moore’s caliber.”

Pro star quarterback JJ McCarthy has not disclosed if he intends to declare for the 2024 NFL Draft or to return to Ann Arbor for the following campaign. Moore would be better served, according to Petagna, by shadowing McCarthy for a year while he adjusts to the Wolverines’ way of life and culture.

Two intriguing quarterback prospects for the Wolverines are three-star sophomore Alex Orji and four-star 2024 commit Jayden Davis. But Petagna stated that Jim Harbaugh and company cannot afford to give up on a guy like Moore who is up for grabs.

“They have to have their wits about them because they’re a little jammed up,” Petagna stated. “You desire JJ McCarthy’s return. But who’s the guy after JJ McCarthy? Is that Orji, Alex? Is that Jaydyn Davis entering? And then there’s a man such as Dante Moore. Timelines don’t always fit together. The players do occasionally. Moore, a 2023 recruiting class product from Detroit’s Martin Luther King High School, was rated as the third-best quarterback and fourth-best prospect overall.Coach Chip Kelly of UCLA and Moore achieved a significant recruiting victory when they traded for the five-star player from Oregon in December 2022. He was the first five-star recruit in the Kelly era and the highest-ranked quarterback signee in UCLA history.

As a true freshman, Moore started five games for the Bruins this season; however, Ethan Garbers was the starting quarterback for UCLA at the end of the campaign. Moore completed 9 games for the Bruins, throwing for 1,610 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions. In a 35-10 victory over San Diego State, he completed 17-for-27 for 290 yards, three touchdown passes, and no interceptions, marking his best performance to date. With a 247Sports rating of 95, Moore is currently ranked as the top player overall in the 2024 transfer portal rankings.
