Michigan S Keon Sabb joins the transfer portal.

According to various sources on Friday morning, the Michigan Wolverines have lost their first significant loss of the summer to the transfer portal: safety Keon Sabb.

The former top-100 overall prospect was originally committed to playing for the Clemson Tigers, but defensive coordinator Brent Venebals accepted the head coaching position at Oklahoma, prompting Sabb to reconsider his choice. He decided to commit and sign with the Wolverines on the first day of the early signing period in December 2021.

What it means, why it’s such a big deal

Michigan football DB Keon Sabb is entering the transfer portal

Sabb was considered the Wolverines’ second best safety option. Of course, Rod Moore and Makari Paige will return for another season in 2024, but Sabb got action on a regular basis late in the season when both of those players were also performing well.
This past year, the sophomore burst out with 28 tackles, including six in the National Championship, 0.5 sacks, four pass deflections, and two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown against Minnesota.

What’s Next?

Michigan will now go into spring ball with Rod Moore, Makari Paige, Zeke Berry, Brandyn Hillman, and others at safety. That is, until the next defensive backs coach convinces Sabb to stay at Michigan.

Stephen Adegoke was supposedly lined up to be that guy, but he has decided to stay with the Houston Texans. According to Sam Webb of The Michigan Insider ($), Lamar Morgan, the University of Louisiana’s defensive coordinator, is next on Sherrone Moore’s list.

Morgan, a former outstanding safety at Louisiana from 2003 to 2007, will return to his alma university as defensive coordinator in 2022. According to his article on Louisiana’s website, “Morgan’s defense ranked in the top half of the Sun Belt Conference in total defense, and the team recorded 15 interceptions, putting them 14th nationally.” Five players of the defense were named All-Sun Belt, including first-team picks Zi’Yon Hill-Green, who tied the school record for most career sacks, and Bralen Trahan, who placed in the top 25 nationally in interceptions with four.”
Should Morgan be appointed as Michigan’s next defensive backs coach, perhaps these accolades will persuade Sabb to reconsider entering the portal. It’s difficult to lose familiar coaches (Jesse Minter, Steve Clinkscale), but it may be encouraging to have new coaches who can continue Michigan’s defensive prowess.

Meanwhile, Michigan’s 2024 squad has suffered a significant setback. We’ll update you as more information becomes available.
