Grant Newsome is stepping up. For a long time, Michigan football supporters saw him as a rising star among coaches.

According to multiple people with knowledge of the matter, the former Wolverine player will be elevated to offensive line coach after serving as U-M’s tight ends coach for the past two seasons. Michigan is hoping that Newsome, the OL coach, can carry on the high standards set by Sherrone Moore, who was promoted to head coach last week.

Under Jim Harbaugh, Newsome played offensive lineman at Michigan from 2015 to 2016, but his playing career was cut short by a catastrophic knee injury. He returned to the football program in a formal coaching role after receiving two degrees from the University of Michigan, serving as assistant tight ends coach from 2018 to 2019 and tight ends coach from 2022 to 2023.

For Newsome, a Michigan native with a bachelor’s and master’s degree, coaching wasn’t a guarantee. He worked as a Washington intern for US Representative Debbie Dingell in 2019. Jim Harbaugh has always expressed his belief that Newsome would make an excellent US president in the future and shares anecdotes about how the 26-year-old chose to focus on football over jobs in politics and banking.
