Michigan football’s top-ranked 2025 promise decommits

Michigan’s football program has lost a top-100 recruit in its 2025 class just one week after winning its first national championship since 1997.

Hollywood (Florida) Chris Ewald Jr., a four-star cornerback from Chaminade-Madonna Prep, told On3′s Hayes Fawcett that he has decommitted from the Wolverines and subsequently confirmed it on his Instagram page.

The 6-foot-1, 160-pounder was Michigan’s initial verbal pledge in the 2025 cycle in December 2022, although he has recently shown interest in other teams as well. According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, the No. 86 overall recruit and No. 11 cornerback in the country has visited Florida State, Miami, and Georgia and has gotten 33 reported offers.

His decision hurts the Wolverines, who are hoping to build momentum on the recruiting path after winning the national title over Washington last week. Ewald’s choice coincides with Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh’s interview with the Los Angeles Chargers.

In the 2025 class, the Wolverines presently have three commits: four-star quarterback Carter Smith, four-star defensive lineman Bobby Kanka, and four-star tight end Eli Owens.

Michigan’s key position of need this season is cornerback. It signed two players in the 2024 class, neither of whom was ranked in the top 700 nationally.
