Michigan football is wrapping up on a big-time defensive line coach

Sherrone Moorre is close to hiring a new defensive line coach for Michigan football, and it appears that he will come from a Big Ten competitor.

Michigan football fans have been outraged by some of the departures from the Wolverines coaching staff. Mike Elston and Steve Clinkscale are the most recent departures.

It’s reasonable to feel anxious after these departures. Assistant coaches have a significant role in recruitment, and their departures are likely to have a greater impact on player retention/departure than head coach Jim Harbaugh.

However, following Clink’s departure, which was understandable in my opinion when he was passed over for the defensive coordinator position, Sherrone Moore has been working.

For starters, he hired Sean Magee as general manager, which was a wonderful decision. Magee had worked for Jim Harbaugh and Michigan football before becoming the Bears’ Chief of Staff.

Oklahoma was planning to hire Magee, but Moore was able to entice him to Michigan football. Magee will help improve things from a NIL standpoint. He can also aid with coaching hires, having helped bring Ben Herbert to Ann Arbor in the first place.

Moore now appears to be preparing to make another major hire, this time as a defensive line coach. According to multiple sources, Greg Scruggs is poised to leave Wisconsin for Michigan football. Even Wisconsin players have begun to post on social media.

Scruggs coached at Cincinnati for four years. He worked as the defensive line coach for two years before becoming the director of player development. Scruggs spent the 2022 NFL season with the Jets before returning to Wisconsin last season.

Nothing is official yet, but if Moore is able to hire Scruggs, it would be another significant addition and a reminder of why Michigan supporters should wait until Moore has built his coaching staff before passing judgment.
