McNeil sends message to Burnley after what occured to him last night

Following Everton’s Wednesday night elimination of his former team from the Carabao Cup, Dwight McNeil has extended his best wishes to Burnley.

On November 1, McNeil, 23, put on perhaps one of his best performances for the Blues at Goodison Park; nonetheless, the former Clarets winger was roundly jeered by the visiting supporters for the entire ninety minutes.

On November 1 at 8:05 p.m., BBC Sport writer Shamoon Hafez noted his bewilderment at the supporters’ response to McNeil while also noting that they didn’t give him the best reception in Merseyside.

After the game, McNeil sent a message to Burnley supporters via his personal Instagram account.

“A club I hold dear in my heart, always wishing Burnley the best,” he wrote while detailing his experience.

Why do some football supporters jeer their ex-players even though they didn’t have a strained relationship?

Although McNeil wasn’t especially good for the Clarets before Everton signed him, he wasn’t particularly good either after they were demoted from the Premier League.

Perhaps the fans object to his appearing to jump ship when they entered the Championship.

In any case, we witnessed it at the West Ham game as well when Declan Rice was jeered by their supporters during his first-ever Arsenal match against them.

This young man recently led them to victory in Europe. In the whole history of the London club, only Bobby Moore and Billy Dodds have won championships while leading West Ham, yet Rice is receiving jeers.

These days, football fans have an odd attitude of entitlement.

Rightfully, McNeil departed Burnley to play in the Premier League for a major club at Everton, where he was reunited with his former manager, Sean Dyche.

Who in their right mind would have said no?
