Major trade idea that Lions general manager should consider

Bleacher Report has suggested a big deal for the Detroit Lions to improve their defense, which would be a good pattern for Brad Holmes to follow this offseason.

The Detroit Lions have the opportunity to reshape their roster this offseason, with a leaky defense expected to be the primary focus.

There is a chance for a dramatic move at cornerback, which is a major need this offseason. Bleacher Report’s David Kenyon has proposed precisely such a trade for the Lions.

“If Patrick Surtain II isn’t already the best cornerback in the NFL, he’s not far from it. He is easily the most skilled player on the Denver Broncos, having been named a first-team AP All-Pro in 2022.

“Given that fact, the concept of trading him may appear absurd. But as Denver embarks on a rebuild, its financial situation is dire—and that’s before quarterback Russell Wilson’s impending departure wrecks the books even more in 2024.”

“Look, the Broncos shouldn’t be so eager to trade Surtain. They could also get a huge return from the Detroit Lions, who had a fantastic season despite a serious cornerback issue.”

“Detroit ranked 31st in yards allowed per pass attempt and yielded 28 touchdowns compared to 16 interceptions.”

“Surtain would definitely cost at least two first-round picks. But if the Lions are serious about winning the Super Bowl, he’d make a championship-worthy impact at their most critical position.”

Kenyon requested that the Lions give up their first-round picks this year and next, as well as a fourth-round pick in 2025.

Surtain would undoubtedly provide the Lions with a true shutdown cornerback. The greatest question is if Brad Holmes would give up a pair of first-round picks to get such a talent.

Lions general manager Brad Holmes would be wise to consider a huge trade.
Dealing with a player of Surtain’s caliber would be costly. But, at this stage, the Lions are in a position to make all-in moves.

In free agency, there are little certainties about which players will work out. Detroit had great expectations for Cam Sutton last year, but by the end of the season, he was battling mightily. While Holmes has drafted well, it is never guaranteed that a rookie would fit in and perform well right away.

In a critical position like cornerback, a competitive team like the Lions cannot afford to take any chances that do not have a possibility of translating right away.

This offseason, Holmes must remember how close the Lions were to winning a championship and make moves that will propel them closer to the top.

Trading for Surtain or another elite defense would qualify as such a move, regardless of what draft picks the Lions may have to give up in the process. The defense must be improved to championship standard, and the trade market has potential winning blockbuster options such as this.
