Main $19 million defender returns to the Browns before the playoffs

The Cleveland Browns have struggled with injuries all season, but the team received some good news earlier this week.

Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, a defensive end with the Browns, suffered a pectoral injury in Week 14 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The squad first thought Okoronkwo was out for the season.

However, the 28-year-old pass-rusher recovered well enough to return to practice this week in a restricted capacity. Okoronkwo’s presence gives the franchise serious hope that he can contribute to the team’s postseason run, which begins in 8-10 days depending on scheduling.

Okoronkwo talked to Camryn Justice of News 5 Cleveland about his injuries and what it means to be able to return in time for the Browns’ wildcard playoff game.

“I’d compare it to mountains and valleys because… I was depressed and ready for the following few months. “And then there was a glimmer of hope,” Okoronkwo told Justice on Thursday, January 4. “It was a little bumpy, but I’m glad, I’m happy where I’m at right now.” It felt fantastic to be around my boys; it elevates my spirits.”

Ogbo Okoronkwo Meaningful Piece for Browns’ Top-Rated Defense

Okoronkwo also expressed his desire to participate throughout the playoffs. The Browns have wrapped up the No. 5 seed and will rest several of its key and/or injured players in Sunday’s regular-season finale against the Cincinnati Bengals, which Okoronkwo is expected to miss.

“The plan is for me to be back at some point in the Super Bowl run that we’re going on,” Justice was quoted as saying. “I’m just going to keep on doing my part, keep working hard, making sure that I can help the team in the best way possible.”

Okoronkwo’s health is “trending” better, according to head coach Kevin Stefanski.

“Obviously, he’s trending in the right direction,” Stefanski said. “He’s put in a ton of work, so it’s exciting to have him back out there.”

Ogbo Okoronkwo Has Proven Valuable Addition to Browns Defense in 2023

Okoronkwo has been a solid addition for the Browns this season after signing a three-year, $19 million contract with the team in the offseason.

In 17 games with the Houston Texans in 2022, the former linebacker turned defensive end set career highs with 17 pressures, 11 QB hits, 9 tackles for loss, and 5 sacks. According to Pro Football Reference, Okoronkwo has 12 pressures, 8 QB hits, 12 tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks in 13 games with the Browns this season.

Okoronkwo has yet to start a game in his rookie season with Cleveland, where he is a backup to All-Pro Myles Garrett and fellow offseason addition Za’Darius Smith. Okoronkwo, on the other hand, played 434 defensive snaps and 24 special teams snaps for Cleveland in 2023.
