Lions Security: Detroit Police Confident in Draft Security

Detroit will increase security efforts for the NFL Draft.

Detroit will host several major athletic events in the next months, including the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Midwest Regional and the NFL Draft.

The Midwest Regional will be held at Little Caesars Arena on March 29-31, followed by the NFL Draft on April 25-27 at Campus Martius Park and Hart Plaza in downtown Detroit.

The draft, held in several venues since 2015, is projected to attract over 300,000 attendees to Detroit this April. With it comes the necessity for a stronger police presence in and around the city.

During a recent interview with Lansing-based TV station WILX-TV, Detroit Police Chief James White told viewers that his department is prepared for increased activity due to the draft.
The department’s efforts will be supported by the implementation of gun-free zones, helicopters, undercover police, and the use of its real-time crime center.
“Very confident in our plan, very confident in our partnerships, and certainly very confident in our community,” White told a Lansing television station.
White stated that the Kansas City Chiefs’ title parade shooting will be extensively examined by his department as they finalize draft preparations.
“Certainly, we look at what’s happened, and we’re going to study it like we study unfortunately the other events that have happened throughout our country already this year and just learn from them,” White was quoted as saying.
The draft event will include musical performances, interactive exhibits, and signature sessions. Admission is free.
