Lions OC anticipates Carolina showing interest in the open HC position

According to Josina Anderson, Lions offensive lineman Ben Johnson is anticipated to be given serious consideration for the head coaching job at Carolina.

This isn’t shocking at all because Johnson is among the front-runners to take over as head coach in the next cycle. Last season, he had interviews with a number of teams, including Houston and Carolina, but he finally chose to play another season in Detroit.

According to Anderson, Johnson turned down a second interview offer from Carolina in 2018, which resulted in the team bringing on former head coach Frank Reich.

The 37-year-old Johnson began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Boston College in 2009. Johnson then oversaw tight ends for the 2011 campaign.

Johnson joined the Dolphins in 2012 as an offensive assistant, and in 2013 he was elevated to assistant quarterbacks coach.

Before joining the Lions in 2019 as a quality control coach, Johnson was the Dolphins’ tight ends and wide receivers coach. In 2020, he served as the Lions’ tight ends coach. In 2022, he was elevated to offensive coordinator.

The Lions offense, which includes No. 4 passing yards per game and No. 5 rushing yards per game, is ranked No. 2 in yards per game and No. 6 in points per game in 2023.
