Lions are expected to spend $180 million on Jared Goff in 2024

Jared Goff, who helped lead the Detroit Lions to their first division title in 30 years, could be in line for a large paycheck.

Sportrac’s Michael Ginnitti anticipated that the Lions would make a big financial contribution to their quarterback this offseason, cementing his position as the franchise signal caller. Goff is in the final year of his deal with the Lions, but he is anticipated to be extended in the following year.

Ginnitti predicted it would be significant.

Jared Goff Headed for ‘Financial Security’

Ginnitti predicted quarterbacks for all 32 teams in 2024, noting that the Lions were likely headed toward a large commitment to Goff despite their struggles with turnovers this year.

“Los Angeles’ trash is Detroit’s future,” wrote Ginnitti. “Jared Goff hasn’t had the cleanest season (10 interceptions, 6 fumbles), but he’s done more than enough for the Lions to give him more financial security.” Goff will enter a contract year in 2024, earning $26.6 million against a $31.6 million cap hit.”

Ginnitti eventually predicted that the Lions will sign Goff to a four-year, $180 million contract in 2024, with $135 million guaranteed and $50 million in cash.

“The 29-year-old currently calculates to an extension in the $39M-$40M per year range, but a significant postseason run can certainly flex those numbers quite a bit,” he said in his post.

Goff’s future with the Lions was never assured. He led the Detroit Lions to a 3-10-1 record in his first year after being traded from the Los Angeles Rams in 2021, while throwing for 3,245 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions – his lowest performance outside of his rookie season.

Goff returned in 2022, completing 65.1% of his throws for 4,438 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions while leading the squad to its first winning season in five years. Goff followed it up with another great season in which he completed 67% of his throws for 4,255 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.

Lions Publicly Committed to Jared Goff

The Lions have been upfront about their desire to extend Goff’s contract. Prior to the start of the season, general manager Brad Holmes spoke with Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press about the contract discussions, expressing optimism about an agreement.

Holmes stated that both parties were committed to a deal that would keep Goff in Detroit for the foreseeable future while also providing the organization with cap space to continue building around him.

“We’ve kept open dialogue with their agents in camp and I think the transparency has been good, so we’ll see how it goes,” Holmes went on to say.

With Goff committed, the Lions may be able to search around for a replacement for their promising rookie quarterback, Hendon Hooker. NFL general manager Randy Mueller suggested in an article for The Athletic that the Lions could use their fourth-round pick as trade bait.

Hooker has not played this season, having spent the majority of the year recovering from a torn ACL that ended his senior season at Tennessee.

“Jared Goff is having an outstanding year — so much so that they almost have to extend his contract at some point soon,” Mueller wrote in his report. “To that end, if you’re a team that had similar thoughts as I did regarding Hooker and still have doubts about your QB of the future, why not make a call to Detroit?”
