Legendary Ohio State player encourages Texas QB to join the Buckeyes

Following the debut of Arch Manning and Ohio State’s defeat at Michigan, the former running back for the Buckeyes took a shot.

Texas Longhorns defeated Texas Tech 57-7 on Friday night, with five-star freshman quarterback Arch Manning leading a touchdown drive in his college debut. Additionally, following Ohio State’s 30-24 loss to Michigan, and in light of Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers’ purported indecision regarding whether to return to school or declare for the NFL Draft, former Buckeyes standout Maurice Clarett recommended that Manning transfer to Ohio State.

Kyle McCord, the quarterback for Ohio State, may still be eligible for several more seasons if he decides to leave Columbus. Additionally, in his debut season as a starter, McCord has passed for 3,170 yards and 24 touchdowns with six interceptions.

But like coaches, Ohio State players are evaluated based on their performance in the game against Michigan. McCord passed for 271 yards and two touchdowns against the Wolverines, but he also threw two interceptions, one of which was the throw that ended the game.

Manning, who is ranked first in the 2023 class, stayed at Texas this year to save his redshirt. To the pleasure of Longhorn supporters, however, Manning joined the Texas Tech game after Ewers and company had already decided the outcome. Manning ran three times for seven yards and completed two of five throws for thirty yards. Manning led Texas to a touchdown on his second drive after completing a 13-yard pass to Casey Cain to convert a fourth-and-5 close to midfield. Tre Wisner drove in for a score three plays later.

Ewers, the former top-ranked player in his individual recruiting class, came into this season as a predicted first-round pick and returning starter. Interestingly enough, Ewers went from Ohio State to Texas at Clarett’s suggestion following a season in which he redshirted and did not play. He participated in 10 games in the previous year and this year, finishing with a completion percentage of nearly 70% for 2,709 yards, 17 touchdowns, and five interceptions while playing in 10 games.

While many anticipated that the switch from Ewers to Manning would be easy, Ewers acknowledged that he wasn’t sure if he would continue his education after this season, and backup Maalik Murphy has had his share of struggles.

Ohio State was Clarett’s only home, and it was an incredible year. As a true freshman, he ran for 1,237 yards and 16 touchdowns, including a huge forced fumble and two touchdowns in the national championship game against Miami, which the Buckeyes ultimately won in overtime. Clarett, an All-Big Ten selection, was suspended for his sophomore season after attempting to contest the NFL’s draft eligibility regulations. He was unsuccessful in his appeals court case.
