‘Led to believe…’ Former Wolves striker believes Birmingham City have big intentions for the summer

Former Wolves and West Brom striker Don Goodman believes Birmingham City have huge plans for the summer.

Blues are now fighting to avoid relegation from the Championship, and there is discussion of bringing back Gary Rowett to the team. Last weekend’s defeat to Watford moved the club out of the relegation zone on goal differential.

Mark Venus, who has filled in for Tony Mowbray, who is on leave due to illness, has yet to win a game since taking over as interim manager. It is envisaged that Rowett, who previously in charge of Millwall, will take on the official job of consultant while doing the most of the tasks of a first-team manager.

If Birmingham avoids relegation, it is expected that they will go ‘big’ with player recruitment this summer. It will be Shelby Companies Limited’s second summer window since their acquisition, and it could signal a push for the Premier League.

“I’m led to believe in the summer they will want to go big and ambitious in terms of transfers with a view to pushing up at the other end of the Championship,” Goodman stated on Sky Sports News when discussing Rowett’s potential return to the club.

Birmingham’s 2023/24 season is currently on hold due to the international break, although they will soon face a double-header over the Easter holiday. On Good Friday, they face relegation rivals QPR at Loftus Road, followed by a home game against play-off contender Preston North End on Easter Monday.

Birmingham will face Rotherham United and Huddersfield Town near the end of the season. Rowett’s probable entry might be viewed as rectifying the harm done after John Eustace was controversially dismissed of his duties and replaced by Wayne Rooney.

“Hopefully for Birmingham City’s stake, it will just help them steady the ship,” the 57-year-old said.

“They have some major games coming up. They have QPR, Huddersfield Town (a spot below them), and Rotherham.

“They have some huge games, but also some winnable games. It’s significant for them because they’re ambitious, have American owners, and have made some questionable decisions since moving into the building. I believe we must accept this, and I would expect them to do so. They’re now working to remediate the damage.
