Latest Update: Pete Carroll provides an update on Geno Smith’s injury

Due to a groin injury, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith was unable to play in his team’s loss to the San Francisco 49ers this past weekend.

This week, head coach Pete Carroll gave Smith an update.

Carroll stated, “We’ll see how he comes back,” according to John Boyle of the Seahawks’ official website. “He is receiving all the care he needs during these few days here, and he also gets to spend some downtime. We have a break till Thursday, when we resume practice.

This season, Smith has made 12 starts and completed 64.4% of his passes for 2,918 yards, 15 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. His passer rating is 89.1.

In Smith’s absence, Drew Lock got the start against the 49ers and had a mediocre game, finishing 22 of 31 for 269 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions.

Even if Lock wasn’t bad, Seattle would undoubtedly rather have Smith back in the lineup, especially given how desperate they are right now.

The Seahawks, who were previously 6-3, have dropped to 6-7 and are now out of the NFC postseason contention after losing four straight games. Due to tiebreakers, the Green Bay Packers presently hold the final postseason berth in the conference out of the five teams sitting at 6-7.

Smith is currently in his second season as the full-time starter and his fifth season in Seattle. Following Russell Wilson’s trade by the Seahawks to the Denver Broncos in March 2022, he was forced into the starting lineup. After ending with 4,282 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions in his first Pro Bowl trip last year, Geno Smith was a nice surprise. With a completion rate of 69.8%, he also held the top spot in the NFL.

The 33-year-old played one season each with the New York Giants and Los Angeles Chargers after spending his first four NFL seasons with the New York Jets. In 2019, he signed a contract with Seattle.

Next Monday, the Seahawks play the Philadelphia Eagles. It remains to be seen if Smith really suits up for the crucial game.
