The Detroit Lions have two major offensive players who are question marks heading into the 2024 season, as both tight end Sam LaPorta and running back Jahmyr Gibbs are injured.

Gibbs and LaPorta are struggling with a hamstring injury incurred during practice at some time during training camp. Last week, head coach Dan Campbell delivered some good news on both, stating he expected them back to practice this week.

“We’re hoping the day after the Pittsburgh game — I think we’re going to get a lot of guys back,” Campbell said, per Erik Schlitt of Pride of Detroit. “We’re shooting for Skip (Dan Skipper), (Kevin) Zeitler, (Sam) LaPorta, (Jahmyr) Gibbs, Rodrigo (Malcolm Rodriguez), and I think we may start (DJ) Reader up too. Start working him in individuals. So we’re hoping to get a whole group of guys back on Sunday.”

On Monday, head coach Dan Campbell offered another favorable update on both players.

Sam LaPorta, Jahmyr Gibbs injury updates

According to Nolan Bianchi of The Detroit News, LaPorta and Gibbs resumed practice on Sunday, putting them on track to play in Week 1.

Following great rookie seasons in which both players made the Pro Bowl, LaPorta and Gibbs will be crucial pieces of what is expected to be one of the finest offenses in the NFL again in 2024.

LaPorta had 86 receptions for 889 yards and ten touchdowns in 2023. He was the league’s top rookie tight end in terms of receptions, yards, and touchdowns, ranking first, fourth, and tied for first, respectively.

Despite missing two games, Gibbs accumulated 1,261 scrimmage yards (945 running) and 11 total touchdowns. He is projected to play a larger role in 2024, particularly as a pass catcher.
