Tuanzebe sustained the freak injury while washing the dishes.

Axel Tuanzebe, an Ipswich defender, is expected to be sidelined for at least a month following a strange washing up injury.

The 26-year-old needed surgery after getting a serious cut on his thumb while washing the dishes.

According to the Daily Mail, the centre-back came dangerously near to losing his thumb as a result of the mishap.

Tuanzebe had started all six Tractor Boys Premier League games this season until missing Saturday’s match against West Ham.

Manager Kieran McKenna called Tuanzebe’s unusual injury “unfortunate”.

“He sustained a hand injury in a very unfortunate accident,” McKenna stated. “He underwent surgery and will be out for a time.

“It won’t be a couple of weeks, but probably longer. There are ongoing negotiations with the professionals.

“He’s a natural miss given how he’s started the season. He’ll be out for a little while.”

The former Manchester United and Aston Villa centre-back has undergone successful surgery but will be out for at least a month.

Ben Johnson replaced Tuanzebe in the 4-1 defeat at the London Stadium, leaving the newly promoted team still looking for their first win of the season.
