Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna confirmed that Kalvin Phillips, an on-loan Manchester City midfielder, missed yesterday’s trip to Southampton due to a thigh injury.

Phillips has started the previous two Premier League games with captain Sam Morsy in Town’s engine room.

In his absence, Swedish international Jens Cajuste made his first league start for the Blues after joining on loan from Italian giants Napoli.

When asked about Phillips after the dramatic 1-1 tie, McKenna said: “It’s a very minor injury in his thigh muscle.

“He picked it up late in the training week and was not quite ready for today.

“I’m glad Jens (Cajuste) got his opportunity. I thought he performed well despite not having played many competitive minutes this season.”

Phillips gets an extra day to prepare for next weekend’s encounter, when Champions League side Aston Villa visits Portman Road a week today (2pm ko).
