The Portman Road team is impressing in the Premier League, particularly following a 2-2 draw with Aston Villa.

McKenna believes the former Leeds player is deserving of an England call-up now that he is no longer playing in the Championship.

“That’s obviously going to be for other people to judge and for Lee Carsley to judge at the moment,” he told me.

“I believe Leif’s strengths are evident. I thought this was perhaps his best performance.

“He wasn’t satisfied with his level last week, so I thought today was his best performance, and I believe he has fantastic attributes as an attacking left-back, able to cover distance down the line, deliver really good balls to forward players, both to feet and in crosses, and be a threat coming in at the back post.

“He’s got wonderful attributes, and I believe his defensive game is growing; it will improve over the course of the season, and I believe it has already improved over the first six games with the lessons he’s learned in some of the earlier games.

“And I think he’s at a wonderful point in his career. He’s 24, he’s in his first year in the Premier League, he’s gaining experience every week in a club that supports him well, and if he keeps working, I’m confident he’ll demonstrate his quality throughout the season.”
