Kevin Nagle explains the circumstances that led to Huddersfield Town’s decision to oust Neil Warnock

Neil Warnock was not the specific focus of Terriers owner Kevin Nagle’s social media criticism, he claims in an exclusive interview.

Nagle also clarified that there was no falling out between Warnock and the club prior to the decision to replace him with Darren Moore.

The Huddersfield Town chairman had tweeted: “That was a total drubbing by Norwich City” during the team’s four-goal home loss to the Canaries in August. Unacceptable.

Supporters of the town merit better. The squad is better than this, in my opinion. A few days later, when complaining about the club’s transfer policy in a pre-game press conference, Warnock cited Nagle’s tweet.

When asked if he regretted his tweet or if Warnock’s answer played any role in the decision to change managers, Nagle responded, “Not at all. I noticed some criticism that was being posted on Twitter that was actually a massive overreaction.

I’ll be honest: When I sent that tweet, I actually [meant] that we all needed to improve from top to bottom. That was the overarching message: Regardless of whether I was here for a week, a month, or six months, we simply need to do better overall.

Nobody was ever called out, despite what many might have thought. We never called anyone out. From my perspective, the readers’ response to that may have been excessive.

Neil was fantastic to work with. He went above and above what was required of him and his team. However, we were also aware that there would be a waiting period when the adjustment was implemented. Not even necessary one year, but whenever the perfect moment arrived. I believe our procedures have advanced quite swiftly.

We were aware that we would eventually make the change, and it did so sooner rather than later because there is never a good time to make a change. Really, that’s all there is to it.

“We addressed Neil, just like we had done during our earlier conversations. Neil had said, ‘Look, if you guys feel that it’s time and you’re ready, let us know and we’ll have a chat. So we did, and as you can see, everything turned out really well. No one was forced to accept anything.”

When asked whether he involves his employees in California in these kinds of decisions or if he leaves it entirely up to the local West Yorkshire staff, Nagle responded, “We’re involved in the process.

We have a lot of constructive communication going on; obviously, we don’t when it comes to day-to-day operations, but when it comes to something this serious, there is clearly a lot of discussion.
