Just In: Celtic to sign Ipswich’s star

Celtic have been connected with former St Mirren goalkeeper Vaclav Hladky, whose contract is coming to an end.

The Czech Republic international is now on loan at high-flying Ipswich Town in the English Championship, and Kieran McKenna is keen to sign the ex-Buddies man on new terms as they seek promotion to the Premier League.

Joe Hart is in the final months of his contract and will be 37 in any case, so the Bhoys will need a new goaltender shortly. Joe has been a wonderful servant to the club, but I believe we can all agree that the time has come for him to relinquish the number one position at the club and give a younger, fresher face a chance. Brendan Rodgers will need to let someone go before signing a new keeper with Benjamin Seigrist and Scott Bain on the books.

The club has been connected with a number of shot-stoppers as they try to plan for Joe’s future retirement or if he decides to leave Celtic Park and continue his career elsewhere. Real Madrid’s Andriy Lunin has been widely connected with a move to the Scottish Premiership Champions, as have Kilmarnock loan star Will Dennis, though Rodgers has confessed it is not a priority for him this transfer window.

According to the Czech media publication iSPORT, the Hoops have renewed their interest in his talents, and their sources are also from Scotland. The 33-year-old will be free to speak to possible suitors next month, and while Celtic remain interested, the goalie may see it as his final shot at the English Premier League and the earnings that could be on offer there. But nothing is fixed in stone, and Ipswich still needs to get there, so this could play on his mind. If Celtic win the Scottish League this season, they would gain straight entry into the UEFA Champions League group stages, which is a highly appealing prospect.
